Scout: Hyping swine flu
A concerned parent of one of Scout's sixth-grade friends just knocked on our door. Here's a transcript of the conversation:
Parent: Matt, I just wanted to stop by because I'm concerned. My daughter just talked with Scout, and Scout says you guys have swine flu, and while I'm not very worried [Actually, she was very worried] about the kids, I'm worried about exposure to my 90-year old parents.Scout has been on a crusade to disabuse the world of its infatuation with fear of swine flu, but bragging to the world that we are plagued with it probably isn't the right way to go about that.
Me: We don't have swine flu or anything remotely resembling swine flu.
Parent: Oh, well, Scout said something about your girls being sick...
Me: Lily has an ear infection. I don't think that's contagious. Greta has a cold.
Parent: ...and that Greta was staying with a sick friend who just got back from Mexico...
Me: Um, no. She stayed at a friend's house that will be going to Mexico in four weeks. I don't think she's caught swine flu in anticipation of crossing the border.
Parent: Oh, well, that sounds like a case of miscommunication.
Me: You could say that.
I will be having a talk with her when she gets home from school...if she hasn't put the school on red alert for swine flu pandemic by then.

I can't believe you would let your kids out of the house given that you all have swine flu! I know you will come up with some fancy excuse, but Scout told me loud and clear that that Greta was playing with a maraca and that Isaac had a sombrero--both of which had been made by, provided by, and played with by other children who all had swine flu.
Oh my word. I am laughing so hard I can hardly breathe. I love Scout.
Swine flu heh?? Trying to keep a secret Matt? You were here in Argentina at Christmas and we do have a couple of Mexican elders-I think you met one of them. elder Soler. Greta could have contacted it then! wear the masks----everyone here does. Ilove you MOM
