Making The Economist
I don't generally get excited about being quoted in news stories anymore. It's just part of my job to evangelize for my company, Alfresco.
But there are (at least) three publications that give me shivers if I see my name in them: The New York Times (hit its liberal pages in 2005 and 2009), The Wall Street Journal (made it in 2007), and The Economist (got a nod in 2008 and 2009).
Today was a "shiver" moment with this article in The Economist. The article deals with a shift in my corner of the software industry - open source - which is growing in popularity even as it decreases in its distinctiveness from traditional, proprietary software.
Ultimately, this sort of thing doesn't mean very much. I'm fairly certain my kids could not possibly care less, and Jen has to stifle a yawn when I show her the articles.
But I like to think people respect the Asay name a little more if they see it in print. And it's important it makes me proud to be giving a little back to the Asay name. Ever since we fell from grace as proprietors of the Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau (or so my grandfather tells us) - and boy, what a fall! - I've been trying to do my part to restore Asay pride.
Now if I could only stop yelling at umpires at Isaac's baseball games, that name might go untarnished by me. :-)

Hey, I've been to Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau (I think - I do get confused over all those chateaux) - I'll remember to bow next time we meet...
Don't bow too low: I think my grandfather was having delusions of grandeur.
Btw, the other pub I really want to crack is The Guardian. I'm far too conservative to enjoy reading it (though i will admit to taking a peek or two :-), but I do like Jack Schofield's work. I was supposed to meet him during my last trip to the UK. Do you know him? Let's connect with him over a meal soon. I'm in the UK June 15-16. Maybe the evening of the 16th?
Matt, I totally am your Economist groupie here in Buffalo! I get shivers reading a name of someone I actually know in the Economist...so not quite sure what that says about me!
