13 lucky years

Jen (my wife) and I have been married 13 years today. This is remarkable given that I'm sure she wanted to divorce me in that first year of marriage. That desire has, I hope, dissipated over time. :-)

We went to eat at Glitretind at the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah (if you're ever in the area, you must eat there - it's fantastic, even by Park City standards), and had a wonderful time. 13 years ago we honeymooned here in Deer Valley, and mountain biked almost exactly the same trails as we did yesterday. Everything was much the same as our wedding day 13 years ago, except that we're much happier now, much wiser (I think), and actually able to afford eating out from time to time.

I'm grateful to Jen for enduring so many years with me. She only reads my blog occasionally, so she doesn't have to go to the same extremes that you do, but living with me can be pretty trying, especially given that I work from home, and have for roughly seven years.

Whenever I get uptight about something going on in the open-source world, Jen and my family help to remind me that software really doesn't matter very much in the grand scheme of things. I'm grateful to have work that I find enjoyable, intellectually stimulating, and helpful to society. But even if I didn't - even if I punched a clock and hated my work - my family would be the same.

Here's to hoping that my next 13 years with Jen will be just as "unlucky" as the first 13 have been. And here's hoping that she continues to put up with me, just as the software industry puts up with me.

One more reason to move to Utah

If you've never done The Bobsled above Salt Lake City, Utah, here's a taste. I rode it this morning and filmed it using my helmet cam.

I wish I could get high-quality video through YouTube but, alas, I can't. Still, you get a sense for how much fun the ride is.
